Alternate Side Parking App:Never Struggle With Parking Again
The skills I demoed here can be learned through taking Data Science with Machine Learning bootcamp with NYC Data Science Academy.
Alternate side parking is a system that works by restricting parking on certain sides of the street on certain days and at certain times. This allows for unimpeded street cleaning. It also requires people to struggle to find another parking spot or sit in their car for the designated times in order to avoid tickets.
Let’s look at W 91st st. The days and times for ASP are labeled on this map.
NYC has an open data policy which means that they publish most of the data that they collect. This includes parking ticket information. During 2019 11.3 million parking tickets were issued. Of these tickets, 1.4 million were issued for ASP violations.
My app takes the ASP ticket information and allows the user to see the number and time tickets were issued for a particular ASP zone. Users can search based on the precinct, street, day, and time to see a histogram of the tickets issued throughout the particular time slot of a side of the street. This allows users to possibly make choices about staying in their car or not.
Lets go back to W 91st st.
This histogram shows that during 9:30-11:00 on Fridays there is really no good time to leave your car. The officer can come to check basically any time.
However if we look at 11:30 - 1:00 on Mondays we can see that there is actually a window of time when leaving your car does not seem so dangerous.
There is a period of about 20 minutes from 12:25 - 12:40 where there has not been a ticket issued for the entire year. It would be rather unlikely for you to be unlucky and get a ticket during this period of time.
